in my Element

Whenever I travel I always try to have a treatment. There is just nothing better than indulging in a massage or facial when you’re on holidays and I love exploring new treatments and experiencing how other therapists do things. Its a great way to keep current after 20 years being a beauty and massage therapist. I always pick up something new.

After a few days of intense Ashtanga yoga an d wake-boarding I decided to book myself in for a full body massage at Elements Resort. My therapist Katya, was a gorgeous Serbian girl (now citizen of the world) trained in Yoga and Balinese massage; a firm but soothing massage, including acupressure and percussion movements.

The massage hut was an open air, thatched roof positioned on the sand dunes amongst the bush grass and shrubs. The decor was rustic and lovely perfectly suited to the beach. Katya likes to collect shells from the beach and had thoughtfully placed a bowl of shells under the face hole of the bed.

As Katya carefully washed the sand from my feet I noticed there was no music playing. It soon became apparent why the name “Elements” was appropriate. The sound of the waves crashing on the beach, the birds chirping, insects buzzing and the grass rustling as the sea breeze floated through the open hut.

I drifted into the space I call my “half way world,” neither awake nor asleep, at peace and full of gratitude for the wonderful treatment.

The northwest of sri lanka is a wild and wonderful watersports paradise, but if you find yourself in the Kappaladi area in Sri Lanka be sure to treat yourself to a yoga class, treatment or even make and appointment with the Ayurvedic doctor. The prices are reasonable and the quality is as high as anywhere. Im looking forward to trying the Aerial yoga class next.

The Elements resort is also somewhere to consider staying, the thatched roof bungalows have a remote feeling, like a hideaway from a bond film, the infinity pool is impossibly dramatic as is the 360 view from the bar and yoga studio. The beach bar is the perfect place to enjoy a juice or maybe the local spirit, Arrack, as the sun sets over the horizon.
